Stranger Things Season 4 pits Hawkins, Indiana against its most powerful and most human villain yet: Vecna, a monster whose real name is Henry Creel and whose grudge against Eleven goes back decades. The season's two-part finale kills off one of the show's most beloved new characters, brings Max Mayfield to the edge of death, and ends with Hawkins physically torn open in a way the series had only hinted at before.

Who Is Vecna, and Why Is He Hunting Hawkins Teenagers?

Season 4 finally explains where the Upside Down's monsters came from. Vecna is Henry Creel, a boy who moved to Hawkins with his family in 1959 and was quietly gifted with telekinesis and mind control. As a child he used those powers to kill his mother and sister; his father, Victor Creel, was wrongly imprisoned for the murders and institutionalized, a story Nancy Wheeler, Robin Buckley, and later Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson piece together from old newspaper clippings and Victor's own account.

Dr. Martin Brenner later recruited Henry into his lab as test subject One, the first and most powerful of the numbered children who preceded Eleven. Henry manipulated a young Eleven into helping remove the neural suppressor implanted in his neck, then slaughtered the lab's staff and the other test subjects. Eleven confronted him and blasted him through a tear between dimensions with her powers. Henry did not die; he fell into the Upside Down and transformed into Vecna, a being who considers himself the origin of every Demogorgon, Demodog, and Mind Flayer incursion that followed. In the present day, he begins murdering Hawkins teenagers, including Chrissy Cunningham, Fred Benson, and Patrick McKinney, by trapping their minds in visions of past trauma and snapping their bodies apart from the inside.

The Creel House Finale: Who Dies in Stranger Things Season 4

Max Mayfield is Vecna's fourth intended victim, curse-marked after Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" briefly protects her earlier in the season. In the finale, Jason Carver, still convinced Eddie's Hellfire Club is behind a satanic murder spree, tracks Max and Lucas Sinclair to the Creel House attic and fights Lucas while Max is trapped in Vecna's trance. A rift opens in the floor mid-struggle and kills Jason instantly, tearing through his body as the gate expands.

Meanwhile Nancy, Steve, Robin, Dustin Henderson, and Eddie Munson travel into the Upside Down to attack Vecna's physical body directly while Eleven fights him psychically to save Max. Eddie and Dustin are tasked with luring the swarm of Demobats guarding Vecna away from the others. Eddie refuses to let Dustin die alongside him, pushes him to safety, and stays behind to fend off the bats with his guitar, playing Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in one of the season's signature scenes. The bats overwhelm him; he is bitten repeatedly and dies in Dustin's arms shortly after, telling him he loves him. It is the death fans point to most often when discussing this season, and the show treats Eddie's arc, from coward-in-hiding to willing sacrifice, as its emotional center.

Max herself clinically dies during the ritual: her limbs break, her eyes bleed, and her body goes still in the real world for roughly a minute. Eleven, drawing on encouragement from Mike Wheeler while suspended in a sensory-deprivation tank in California, regains enough strength to pull Vecna off Max's mind and revive her physically. Max survives, but the finale leaves her severely injured; the last clear look at her shows a body in the hospital, alive but barely, with Eleven unable to reach her mind in the same way she used to.

How the Season 4 Finale Ends, and What It Sets Up for Season 5

Vecna is not destroyed. Eleven manages to interrupt his ritual and force his mind out of Max, and the group's attack in the Upside Down wounds him, but he survives and retreats. Because Max's clinical death lasted long enough to complete part of his ritual, Vecna succeeds in opening four gates between Hawkins and the Upside Down simultaneously. The resulting instability rips the ground apart across town: ash rains from the sky, ground splits open in long jagged fissures, and the Upside Down visibly begins seeping into the real Hawkins for the first time in the show's history.

The final scene gathers Eleven, Mike, Will Byers, Joyce, Jonathan, Nancy, and a returned, battle-worn Jim Hopper (revealed earlier in the season to have survived a Russian gulag and fought a Demogorgon in a Soviet lab) in a field, watching the sky darken over Hawkins as the merge begins. Nothing is resolved; the season ends on the disaster starting rather than finishing, framing Vecna's survival and the fractured town as the problem Season 5 has to solve.
